The Mumolade Winter School, Padova, January 2015

The MUMOLADE “Winter school 2015” took place at the University of Padova, Italy, from 19th to 23th of January 2015. High quality and intensive training was provided to the MUMOLADE fellows as well as external young researchers with full grants. The content of the Winter School included extended courses on computational mechanics for multi-phase porous materials (from physics to coupled mathematical models and their numerical solution with the finite element method, including lectures on hydraulic fracture, DEM and tumor growth modelling), high performance computing and isogeometric analysis. The scientific challenges of Vajont catastrophic landslide (Italy, October 1963) were also addressed.

The scientific training covered the following subjects:

  • Hydro-Mechanical coupling in saturated geo-materials: a mathematical model (Prof. L. Sanavia)

  • Consevation laws and numerical discretization (Prof. M. Putti)

  • Hydro-Mechanical coupling in variably saturated geo-materials: a mathematical model (Prof. L. Sanavia)

  • Vajont 1963 landslide: chronicle of a disaster (Prof. R. Genevois)

  • Introduction to parallel computing (Prof. C. Janna)

  • Hydraulic fracture (Prof. B.A.Schrefler)

  • Beyond geomaterials: Multiphysics modelling of tumor growth (Prof. B.A.Schrefler)

  • Introduction to parallel computing (Prof. M.Ferronato)

  • Basic concepts of isogeometric Galerkin formulations with some applications to structural vibrations & dynamics (Prof. A. Reali)

  • Isogeometric collocation methods (Prof. A. Reali)

  • Physics of porous media (Prof. D. Gawin)

  • Sparse numerical linear algebra for HPC (Prof. M. Ferronato)

  • Couplings in modelling heat, moisture and chemicals transport in deformable porous media (Prof. D. Gawin)

  • Vajont 1963 landslide: modelling and open questions (Prof. R. Genevois)

  • DEM modelling of variably saturated geomaterials (Prof. F. Gabrieli)

  • Sparse numerical linear algebra for HPC (Prof. M. Ferronato)

The MUMOLADE fellows also got chance to visit the Memorial Museum in Erto, the Vajont Site and the physical hydraulic model of Vajont at Nove power plant.

A Supervisory Board meeting was held on January 23, 2015.
