Int. Centre for Numerical Methods in Eng. (CIM), Spain

CIMNE is a research and development centre dedicated to promoting and fostering advances in the development and application of numerical methods for the solution of engineering problems.

Competencies and facilities

The visiting researchers will benefit from a long experience (over 20 years) of CIMNE in the education of young researchers in advanced numerical methods and the development of software for the solution of engineering problems related to landslides and debris flows. CIMNE premises are located in the heart of the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in the center of Barcelona. UPC is the second largest technical university in Spain with over 30000 students covering most engineering degrees, computer science, applied mathematics and architecture. CIMNE has modern equipment with individual PC's linked via a fast intranet. CIMNE has access to the computer facility of the Supercomputing Center of Catalonia located at UPC and to the experimental laboratory of UPC. CIMNE collaborates with many research institutes and Universities worldwide.

Key person

Prof. Eugenio OÑATE is Director of CIMNE, Past President of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM), and past President of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) (2000 - 2004). He is author of two text books on finite element structural analysis, editor of 30 books and author of some 200 scientific papers on development and applications of numerical methods (finite elements, finite volumes and meshless methods) to structural and fluid dynamics problems and the development of decision-support system in engineering. He has wide experience in the coordination of EC funded projects.
